CRUCIFIXION

Crucifixion or crucifixion is an ancient method of execution that was carried out by attaching a condemned person—either by tying or nailing—to a wooden base, usually in the shape of a cross—and leaving them to die of starvation and dehydration.

Crucifixion was often practiced in ancient times — by the Persians, Seleucids, Carthaginians and Romans.  The punishment of crucifixion was abolished in Rome in 337 by Emperor Constantine I as a sign of respect for Jesus Christ — the most famous of all crucifixion victims.  [1][2] After that, crucifixion was used almost exclusively in non-Christian countries, most famously Japan during the Tokugawa shogunate.  Today it is preserved only in the penal legislation of Iran.

Certain Christian communities sometimes practice ritual crucifixion in which the crucified person honors Christ by seeking to identify with his suffering, the most famous example being the Philippines.

The most famous reference to crucifixion is the crucifixion, which is an important symbol for Catholics, Orthodox, Oriental Christians, with Protestants preferring to use the cross without the body of Jesus on it.
